We all have preferences when it comes to what tropes we prefer, and since a lot of new books are prioritizing including certain tropes I wanted to give you some insight into mine. I will also be including a list of my least favorite tropes since I feel a bit more passionate about that list.
Enemies to Lovers: I don’t know what the catalyst was behind my favorite trope being Enemies to Lovers, but I can’t help but devour them every time. I have noticed that there are different levels to this trope, and while I enjoy most variations of it I definitely prefer the ones where the “enemy” aspect lasts almost the entire book or over the course of multiple if it is a series. One of the reasons I loved The Wolf King series (yes I am still obsessing) is that the enemies to lovers is believable but still has the perfect amount of pining to keep me wanting more. I love characters like Blake who have strong motivations that force him to keep the love interest at arms length. The only times this trope falls flat for me is: 1) whenever they don’t feel like enemies for believable reasons or 2) if the characters get together too soon and their dynamic loses the fire and they become too agreeable to each other. Bonded by Thorns by Elizabeth Helen does this really well, although the most recent book has fallen a bit flat in this department for me (I am around 40% into it still).
One Bed: Another trope that never gets old for me, especially if you add a bit of possessiveness from the MMC at the thought of the MC sharing a bed/room with someone else. I love this trope in most of the variations I’ve come across because it amplifies the pining aspect (and who doesn’t love “accidental” cuddles in the morning). Bonus points if they are on an adventure and have to share body heat to stay warm.
Sunny+Grumpy: A similar vein to the Enemies to Lovers, this trope gets me every time. As someone who is considered grumpy, I love seeing this trope in books. I love it no matter which character is sunny, but I especially like it when it is the MMC who is grumpy. Mix this trope with forced proximity and I’ll be done with the book in a day.
Forced Proximity: Speaking of Forced Proximity, I love it every time. I just finished reading the first two books in the Compelling Fates Saga by Sophia St. Germain which did a great job at this trope throughout a lot of the first book. I always find it fascinating to see how the characters would act day-to-day through different situations because it makes them feel more real to me. I love this trope especially when the characters have to go on a trip or journey together while they are still in the bickering phase.
I have so many tropes that I love but I am going to leave the list here so I don’t get too repetitive. I know I left out a lot of great tropes, so I would love to hear what your favorites are and if any of mine are also yours.
Thanks for reading!
