I don’t often feel hungover after finishing a book, but “The Wolf King” series by Lauren Palphreyman has left my heart and mind racing in anticipation of the final book in the series. In fact, once I finish typing out this post I will be throwing myself into another adventure in an attempt to move on and forget that I now have a hole in my chest that is waiting to be filled by the the last book in the series that does not currently have a release date. I will try to avoid large spoilers as best as possible, but if you are worried about them I would recommend you go read the books first before continuing any further. Make sure you start with “The Wolf King” before reading “The Night Prince.”
Now on to my thoughts. While the plot overall in the series is not overly unique, Lauren has done an incredible job at making similar ideas stand out from the rest. I saw somewhere that someone compared the series to any other werewolf Wattpad story, which is true in a lot of ways, but I was impressed by the amont of variation in characters, history, romance, and emotion that was contained within these pages. You have the steriotypical subdues FMC who has a history of abuse, but it was refreshing to read a story where it did not feel as though that was all she was. Aurora is a force of nature, and the males were not prepared for her destruction.
I thought that as I was reading through the story that the romance between Aurora and Callum would blindside me in the second book with a third act break up or some miscommunication-based conflict, and in some ways it did. However, I appreciated the maturity of the characters going through “The Night Prince” despite there needing to be more communication on all sides in a lot of situations. It was refreshing to read a story where the character growth was obvious, despite the fact that the story could have easily lead to Aurora becoming passive while she was under the protection of Callum, an Alpha of the Norhern wolves.
That is where my thoughts on Blake comes in, another Alpha who has taken an interest in Aurora and how she can fit into his plans. I have always had a soft spot for the morally grey antagonist, and despite being able to predict certain aspects of his relationship with Aurora before even starting the second book, I could not find it in myself to put the books down until I knew if my hopes would turn out to be fruitful.
The ending of “The Night Prince” has me reeling, still on the precipice of Aurora and Blake’s relationship that was just starting to get interesting, and the discovery that has me rethinking every interaction they had for the clues that I missed on the first read-through. I am not a patient woman, especially not when it comes to a true loathing to lovers story (a girl can dream). I hope Lauren takes me out of my misery soon and publishes the last book before I fall down a rabbit hole of going on a book binge that might never end. I will be impatiently waiting in the meantime until hopefully I can get my hands on the next book in 2026.
On that note, my next adventure will be to experience the world of “Bride” by Ali Hazelwood because I saw one singular reddit page that said it was similar to “The Wolf King” and I am still holding out hope that I will be able to move on soon.
Thank you for listening to my thoughts. I look forward to going on the next journey with you.
